Kononov, Nikolai

Nikolai Kononov was born in 1958 in Saratov. He spent his early childhood in Germany, where his father was stationed in the military. He studied physics at university in Saratov before taking a post-graduate degree at St Petersburg State University. He is a publisher at the independent publishing house INAPRESS, and a nationally acclaimed author of six books of poetry and three novels. Nikolai Kononov was awarded the Pushkin Prize by the Alfred Topfer Foundation,the Berlin Literary Colloquium prize, and the European Union prize. He is a member of the committee of the Russian Booker Prize. Nikolai Kononov’s first novel THE FUNERAL OF A GRASSHOPPER was awarded the Apollon Grigoriev Prize and shortlisted for the Russian Booker and for the alternative «Anti-Booker» Prize in 2000. THE TENDER THEATER was shortlisted for the Andrei Bely Prize in 2004.

Nikolai is married and lives with his family in St Petersburg.
